GCJ-02 Obfuscation

The world - China aside - uses the most common GPS standard known as the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS-84), for all digital mapping products, while China adopt an alternative system of coordinates GCJ-02, colloquially as the “Mars Coordinates” formulated by the Chinese State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping with the alleged goal of improving national security, that debuted during the COld War era to bamboozle foreign intelligence agencies. The strategic GCJ-02 is based on WGS-84 but uses an obfuscation algorithm which adds algorithm offset, which means your real location could be up to meters to kilometres east, west, north or south random errors of what you see on the map.
The Google Maps, shows the problem: the road map data comes from the Chinese government, which employs GCJ-02, but the Google satellite data is from a non-Chinese source and uses WGS-84. When overlaid, the displacement is particularly obvious along China/Hong Kong border - the data shown by online maps are broken where the shifted data and correct data collides. The problem bleeds into the neighbouring pseudo-sovereign state. Far enough into Hong Kong, though, the problem abates.

Information is treated as material. With facts from GCJ-02 obfuscation algorithm to weave potential fiction – the project translates imposing infrastructures of connection into ambiguous functions, as everything is fallen into water. What happens when borders are erased? This imagination with water challenges the most primitive form of boarders between the land and the sea. Water’s comparatively slow refreshing rate in satellite imagery accommodates these forgotten placeless place created by the digital mapping error. Rather than complicating to revolt and refusal, the converted forms are complicit to the collective forgetting, imagining, translating and residing in suppositional existence.
